NAIROBI DISTRICT (implementation is country wide).
Lead Organization KCTA.
Main Objective 16th Edition of the Coffee Quarterly has been published. It is distributed to over 5,000 producers
Beneficiaries Farmers and all other coffee stakeholders.
Duration 12 months.

Project Title Kenya coffee standards pilot project
Lead Organization Coffee Board of Kenya

Main Objective The pilot aims to develop a Kenya coffee standards and benchmark with internationally recognized standards.
Beneficiaries Traders, farmers, roasters, policy makers, researchers, consumers
Duration 24 months.

Othaya FCS

The service providers ICTDI completed the Phase I implementation of the Coffee revitalization pilot project in February 2009.
Phase II implementation commenced in January 2011. Farmers were trained on soil sampling in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture. The society was also facilitated to visit 4 societies that use ICT i.e. Komothai, Gititu, Ndumberi and Gakundi FCS. The management and the supervisory committee members were trained in dry and wet mill processing, management, warranting, outturn numbering, documentation and security. Farmers were trained in chemical and fertilizer application, good coffee picking habits, hand sorting, transportation, and maintenance of the wet processing factories.

Karurumo FCS

Karurumo has 1328 registered members. It is in Maragua District. Implementation started in September 2007. Phase I of the implementation ended in February 2009.

Kaptola FCS is in Bungoma North District.

The factory serves 1,666 members.

Phase I implementation which focused on farmers capacity building was completed in October 2009.


Phase II of the project commenced in Feb 2011 when the service provider was mobilised. A total of 81 TOTs were trained in Good Agricultural Practices by Coffee Research Foundation (CRF). 87 TOTs from Kaptola FCS and other neighbouring societies were trained in organic coffee production. The society is currently undergoing Fair Trade Certification Assessment training and registration. FLO experts have been enlisted to assess the level of preparedness for the fair-trade certification. A total of 645 beneficiaries were trained in the quarter.

Meru Central Cooperative Union

Meru Union is in Meru District. The pilot project focused on three factories, Kinjo, Kiruai and Rigiri farmers. The outreach is 3,000 farmers. Phase I of the implementation ended in January 2009.

Tekangu FCS

Tekangu FCS is in Nyeri District. It has 3 factories with 2,484 registered members. Implementation of Phase I concluded in November 2009.


The society staff was trained in coffee hulling, roasting and packaging. Practical trainings were conducted at the Central Kenya Coffee Mills. The staff was also trained in coffee cupping and quality evaluation. Practical trainings were also conducted at the Tegu factory. The society’s officials were facilitated to visit Rianjagi FCS to learn about coffee hulling and also compare the UTZ certification benefits. The management was also trained in coffee quality analysis and management, trading and marketing. A total of 448 beneficiaries have been trained in phase II.

Rianjagi FCS located in Embu District has a membership of 1340 farmers.

The project implementation ended in February 2011. The pilot project extension was approved in August 2011. The extension phase will focus on improving productivity per tree, facilitate market linkages and acquire Fair Trade Certification.

Kagaari North FCS is located in Embu district and has a membership of 2952.

The pilot concept was approved in April 2010. The service provider was mobilised in March 2011.
The trainings focused on Good Agricultural Practices, compost and foliar spray application practical training, computer use and internet usage, Fair Trade Awareness, organic training among others.

Gatunyu Kigio Project

The pilot concept was approved in November 2008. The pilot project focuses on five Gatanga Region Coffee Growing Cooperative Societies with a membership of 14,000. Among the interventions was technology transfer whereby they were supported by a partner to acquire an ecological pulper. This was piloted in one factory. The factory is expected to scale up to other factories.


Implementation of the project ended in February 2011.

Sasuri FCS is located in Cheptais, Western Kenya has a membership of 1,935. The project was mobilised in February 2011. So far a total of 4,949 beneficiaries were trained on ‘Farmers Field Schools’ trainings focused on increasing quality and cherry production at the farm level.

Kakuyuni Farmer’s Co-operative Society Ltd

The society has 4,515 registered farmers in the five factories. Implementation of Phase I ended in April 2010. The implementation of Phase II was concluded in July 2011. The final progress report was submitted. The trainings conducted during the quarter focused on Good Agricultural Practices, good governance, occupation/ safety health training, credit/risk assessment and management, good processing practices, record keeping and coffee marketing.
